Of course its well known that using white will tend to make a space look bigger, but you might like to try several warmer, creamy shades to create a more sophisticated and one that is less clinical perhaps. You can accent with tile, brick or stone to create a softer more comfortable, perhaps “casual” feel. Continue reading “Using White in Your Home” »

I think I’ve written before that I’m blessed to have a holiday home in Naples Florida and I’m really please with the way it;s looking. It seems that other people say so too because I keep getting asked if I would help decorate other condos by our neighbours, which in truth I’m delighted to do, so you could ask why I’m writing. Not that any of that tells you what a diploma is though or what it should provide! Continue reading “So what exactly IS a diploma in Interior Design?” »

For what it’s worth, perhaps a little abstract, but sitting comfortably in my lovely home in Portugal (which let me not omit I am blessed to own) it strikes me that the rather mesh-mash array of furniture and objet d’art I have, goes against my normal structured careful approach to interior design and I was pondering how it all came about, where have I gone wrong? Why is Real Wood Flooring so much better than Laminate?
Let’s face it – laminate flooring is cheap, easy to lay and readily available from most DIY and hardware stores. But is the, often small, financial saving really worth the many long term drawbacks of laminate flooring? In this article we look at the negatives of laminate flooring and explain why choosing a quality engineered or solid wood flooring is a much better investment for achieving the best long term benefits in your home. A few points to look at before you start-
Firstly you need to consider how your flooring is going to be held down and what it will be laying onto. Is it going directly onto floor joists? If so, the floor joists should be no further apart than 400mm. It would be a good idea at this stage to think about taking up the opportunity of laying an insulation product such as Celotex between the joists. A simple timber baton can be nailed onto the sides of the joists and the Celotex laid on top with the top surface laying level with the top of the floor joist. The additional heat saving and comfort within your room will be noticeable if you use this very simple method. Continue reading “How to lay an engineered floor if I am not a Carpenter” »
